  • To reiterate my prior notes, this is not a robust Gigondas, but everything is in balanced harmony. The berries are bright, there's a nice touch of anise, and the ending lingers with gentle pepper and tar. If anything at all is different, it's that the edges have been sanded down with a fine grit.
    Quite delicious.

  • $13.50 for a proper Gigondas? I would have called it a baldfaced lie had I not tasted it myself. Full bodied and velvety, it brings dark cherry and bright raspberries to the nose and palate intermingled with some spice box, followed by a lithe, mildly peppery tobacco tar back end that lingers pleasantly. This is the very definition of excellent QPR.
That said, as per my reviews on the 2019 sister bottling "2019 La Compagnie Rhodanienne Gigondas Bois de Menge" -the only distinction of which is a company name change as far as I can discern- it is not a full throated Gigondas, but rather a more restrained, marginally less complex version thereof. That restraint, for those who may not be familiar with Gigondas, may still come off as powerful enough.
I hope to get several more bottles when I return to the store.

    Day 2
Holds up very well -the ending is more leathery now, actually, in a good way. This stuff is crazy good value. I need to pick up a case as my go-to for hearty meal nights.

  • This is very like the 2018 in its quite full body, its rich and slightly sweet fruit with a sprinkling of pepper and other spices, enough acidity for balance and finish veering towards liquorice and liqueur. Add to that a hint of bonbon anglais but at a low enough level not to pall and unobtrusive 15% alcohol and we have a good suave Gigondas, if not up with the most muscular or complex of its kind. That is what I wrote about the 2019 Bois de Menge a few months ago. This wine is labelled Clos du Bois de Menge. Does anyone here know what is the difference between the two, if any? The previous TN still applies though I fancy that there was a tad more structure and complexity, which could be attributable to some extra ageing or to a slightly different wine. Very good in spite of my perplexity.
