  • Popped, decanted and followed for 4 hours. Not a lot of sediment. The nose has some blue flowers - violets and stuff. At first, there was customary creosote/railroad ties that you would expect from a Barolo, but it soon morphed into a very nice dark fruit and floral palate. Extremely smooth with no rough edges. I would say two hours after decant was the peak, but it mostly leveled off after that with not much of a down turn. Very little evidence of prunes or other flavors from the extremely hot weather that year. My guess is that they picked a bit on the early side. Overall an excellent wine. I have had good luck with early 2000s Rocche dei Manzoni wines and this is no exception. Although this wine is still at its plateau, I get a very tiny whiff of sherry. Is it the additional fruit from age or the beginning of a downturn? Hard to say. I think it is the former and it has time before it turns, but no need to hold this longer.

  • Manzoni did well with this wine considering the heat of the vintage, but the profile shows some of its effects. A touch vegetal, and the wood has not fully integrated. But there are plenty of pluses to this wine, including the richness of the fruit, the balance, and a nice finish.

  • No detailed contemporaneous note, but this wine did not have the negative characteristics of the 2003 wines that suffered from the continent-wide extreme heat. There was no over ripe prunishness. Smooth and ready to drink.

  • My last bottle of 2003. Opened during family dinner by occasion of my wife and my birthday. Full body, classical Nebbiolo’s ruby with brick tints color. Starts with impressive red fruits and flowers aroma and continues truffle, tobacco and cigar box. Dominant cherry and currants palate, lingering earthy and dark chocolate finish. Rich but very elegant and charm, silky texture, complex and balanced, well integrated tannins and lovely berries acidity. Food friendly, best match is stewed veal with truffle sauce. Serve 17º - 20º. Open about one hour in advance. Post mature, drink now. June 23, 2017

  • 2016 10 23 Piemonte Tour dinner (Ristorante Bovio): decanted for 1-2 hours
    dark red-purple with light rim
excellent ripe dry red cherries tertiary nose, grip tannins, still very young wine, subtle fine acetone flavours, medium structured and complexity, very good aftertaste.
