Presented double-blind. The wine is bright garnet moving towards an orangish rim and a transparent core; medium+ viscosity and no staining of the tears nor were there signs of sediment. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of ripe Morello cherry, bruised raspberries, some tar, some red flowers, dried herbs and some dry gravelly earth for good measure. On the palate, the wine is bone dry with high, nearly rip-your-face-off tannin and medium(+?) acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The fruit is generous on the palate and almost has a sweet attack. Due to the color, nose and structure, initial conclusions have me thinking Nebbiolo or Sangiovese but since I get no staining at all and the tannins are so high, I wasn’t comfortable calling Sangiovese. So I called Nebbiolo, from Italy, from the Langhe, 2020…and I stopped there. I thought it might be a Langhe Nebbiolo from a really great producer in Barolo and maybe the vintage was playing with me. Welp…I was more than in the ballpark. “Convento” is Luigi Oddero’s second wine made from fruit predominately sourced from La Morra. Drink now with some patience and through 2032.

Decanted for an hour. Tart cranberries, ripe red cherries, ripe strawberries, tobacco, ash and rose petals on the nose. Palate adds some coca powder and bitter herbs. Guessing a little bit of oak influence here; but not too much. The palate creates a "bitter cocoa" sensation that I really like.
Medium + body with medium + acid, and high tannins. Drinkable now, good for what it is, and probably meant to drink on release; but it's still developing. If you open it now, definitely decant it for at least an hour. If you can bear to hold it 2-4 years from here though, you will be greatly rewarded.

Part of a tasting menu food pairing. This was a light and pleasant Barolo that was supple and graceful. Was served with duck and wasn’t a perfect pairing.

Dark cherries and red currants. Some tobacco on the palate. A bit of acidity and some tannins which are nicely integrated at this point. My entry price was steeper than most, it seems, so the rating is a reflection of the value. I've had far superior barolos around the $50 price point. I would buy this on sale, as others have, but wouldn't pay sticker for it and would avoid marked up bottles at restaurants.

Light in color. Gentle nose. Dry, spicy, balanced.
