  • 100% Shiraz (later only called Vat 11). Very pale garnet with a volatile nose. Not a lot of fruit here. Palate is looking much better with grippy tannins, juicy acidity and even some red fruit notes. Med+ finish.

  • The second bottle from a purchase with dodgy provenance. Cork soaked up the side and some gunk on top, and cork came out in pieces. Was expecting the worst. On pouring - still a lively pale garnet with a slight brick tint, but very acceptable for its age. The first sniff - classic Hunter River Burgundy - could have mistaken it for a Lindies HRB from the same period. The palate is light to medium-bodied (think aged Burgundy), wonderfully poised in its flavour and structural elements, and there's a symphony with red fruits, leather, sous bois, liquorice. The acidity is tightly woven in and refreshing. Really wonderful, this bottle - considerably better than the first bottle. At this age, as with the old adage, there are no good wines, only good bottles.

  • Pale brick-garnet. Attractive nose of forest floor, ripe raspberry, baking spices and quinine. Medium-bodied, flavours of dried herb, earth, Chinese medicine and leather, a slightly green acidity that just holds back from being too sharp. A wisp of grip.

Main difference noticed between Tyrrell’s and L is the the latter is typically “purer”, while Tyrrell’s has an earthy veil on the palate. The nose on this one is better than the palate. A reasonable effort from what is supposed to be a weaker Hunter vintage. 12.5% ABV. This bottle had questionable provenance - cork with leaks above most of it.
