  • 1977 advised as a dry growing season with heavy rain in the middle of vintage; some good reds produced notwithstanding.

This Vat 9 was produced from grapes from the 8 Acres vineyard. The label states that the grapes were picked after the rains had begun, and that the grapes were in sound condition but with sugar slightly lower than usual. A small percentage of the wine aged in new German oak puncheons.

Garnet with a brick hue, still lively in appearance. On the nose, it is red-fruited and studded with baking spices, and subtle notes of cedar. Medium-bodied, red-fruited with earth. cinnamon and licorice and a slightly tangy acidity (VA) that works well with the flavour profile. Tannins fully resolved. It's an eminently refreshing table wine that is performing well in its twilight years, and seems like it can continue holding for some time.

This bottle was of uncertain provenance, with an upper-shoulder fill level and cork soaked through.
