  • Domesticated Rhône

This isn’t earth-shattering news. There have been Rhône-styled wines from the U.S. for some time. I just thought it to be an adequate title for today’s post, although slightly below my usual play on words as a title.

I’m talking about another Carol Shelton wine. This time the:

Carol Shelton Coquille Blanc (Paso Robles) 2021

Having recently reviewed the Carol Shelton “Wild Thing” Viognier 2022, I decided that it was time to review another wine of theirs. Although finding the wine at 50% off did play a role in buying the wine, as did the 93-point review.

I love Rhône whites, especially when they include copious amounts of Grenache Blanc. The mix is comprised of 30% Grenache Blanc, 30% Roussanne, 30% Viognier, and 10% Marsanne all from the Nevarez Vineyard in Paso Robles and all sustainably grown. After being 100% barrel fermented, the wine is allowed to undergo 50% malo, helping retain some of its crispness.

Finishing off the wine for 8 months in both French and Acacia barrels, that are either on their second use or longer, what emerges is most definitely a white Rhône-styled wine. The flavors of the Grenache Blanc are there along with those of the Marsanne and Roussanne grapes. Layers of stone fruit, pear, and apricot with a vein of minerality shine through along with that crisp acidity. This wine is delightful.

While producing many different wines (Zin being the most prominent), it should be noted that her production of each wine stays relatively small, so finding and acquiring the wines may require some ardent looking, but I think you’ll be well rewarded should you be so lucky.

    Cheers

  • 4th Saturday Brown Bagger (J&S’s): Double blind. Apple and cotton-like notes follow through on the palate. Has a good bit of weight on the palate; somewhat rich texture. Reminds me a bit of the marsanne we had at the Friday group brown bagger a week ago. (J&S)

  • Notes of key lime, peach, and mango coalesce throughout, with hints of minerality weaving in. Weighty, but a trickle of acidity keeps it moving. Delicious.
