Color was very transparent with a faded and mostly tan rim and maybe just a touch of garnet towards the center. The nose was very tertiary and earthy, very old-world-esque. The palate however was a big surprise with very intense true cherry notes and a medium body with medium acid. Very well balanced and drinkable. Big surprise here from a ~40 year old zinfandel.

Decanted an hour. Very soft cork. Pale transparent orange color, could have easily been confused for a rose.
Nose is all tertiary. Leather, cigar box, dried tobacco, barely some dried red fruit back there. The palate is another story entirely. Full mouthfeel but not heavy. Bright acidity. Pounding fruit consistent with zinfandel. Herbal thyme. Finish is slightly clipped.
A stunning showing despite the absent color. A time capsule of classic winemaking. Why did we stop doing this?! Past peak and could have been better 10 years ago. Nonetheless a great flyer for $20 on WineBid.
