  • Decanted and enjoyed over two evenings with spicy food. This has really smoothed out at this point in time and seems to lack most of the very strong, terroir inspired tar and smoke which I described in my previous notes. In fact, most of the previously annotated power is gone and it now comes across as being slightly thin, somewhat hollow and very uninspiring. I suspect this has peaked and may have started its decline. I suggest drinking sooner rather than later.

  • Aroma and flavor of cherry but over powered by smoke as if the grapes wee grown during a wild fire.

  • Popped and poured; consumed over two days. Lot's of tar and smoke on the nose...once again. Dark fruit hanging in the background but playing second fiddle. Not yielding a whole lot of pleasure at the moment. On day two, the tar had subsided a small amount but it's still a strange drink.

  • Insanely intense, lots of tar and tannins. Fruit took many hours to start showing a bit. Not sure what to make of this, therefore not rated.

  • Heavy bottle. We poured the wine into a decanter and served the first glasses immediately. The wine was dark ruby in colour and offered black currant, dark cherry, blueberry, bell pepper, vegetal notes, spices, leather and tobacco on the nose. On the palate the wine showed black currant, cherry, blackberry, red pepper, bell pepper, vegetal notes, tobacco, spices, liquorice, coffee and some chocolate, with prominent, medium to medium-plus acidity, bitter, medium-plus tannin, some heat from the alcohol and average length of the bitter finish. The full-bodied wine had good complexity and concentration, but seemed underripe and disjointed. I gave a bottle I had back in 2011 the benefit of doubt, but the wine hadn’t improved for the better. This 2006 did not play in the same league as the fabulous 2007, and as far as I recall from tastings the more recent vintages did not show equally well either. It’s a real pity that a winery that in some years is capable of producing great wines (like 2007) does not mange to show a little more consistency. Drink up.
