  • Cherry, tea and spice notes. Silky and very well balanced. Medium body and translucent color, but there is sneaky power and presence here. Should age well. Very good.

  • somewhere between garnet and ruby and with medium body. very aromatic nose of rose petals, black cherry, raspberry, tea leaves and blood orange zest. a bit autumnal on the entry, the fruit brightens while the earthy accents grow deeper. lovely complexity in display already, buoyed by the zesty acidity and anchored by subtle tannins. very long.

excellent already with room for development.

13.4% AbV; from Coury selection massale vines planted ~1989; 15% whole-cluster; fourteen months' ageing in neutral oak.

  • Medium nose shows cranberry, raspberry, rose petal, orange zest, sour cherry. Palate is fresh, lovely acidity, delicate fruit that's nicely balanced, subtle complexities of tasty red fruits, friendly finish, very light tannins. Neutral oak, nicely made.

  • 2021 Oregon Pinots Blind: My first, group's 5th. I can see why the others didn't like it - this wine had a very strong smoky oolong tea character, incredibly distinctive. One of the naysayers described it as "old books". But as I found many of the wines in this tasting too simple, for me this tea-character added some much needed complexity. Tea, roses and red fruit on the nose, silky finish, less drying tannin than many of the other bottles here, fresh, light to medium bodied but good concentration. Well priced, too.

  • I was really looking forward to a thorough and detailed tasting with Evan Martin, but on arrival at 10am for our appointment, we were informed he only had at most 30 minutes due to the not-totally-unexpected fact that he was going to have to start picking that morning. When the moment is right you can't wait. So, we had to run through a bunch of wines rather quickly. I took cursory notes and will not rate the wines as a result. Every previous experience with his wines on the whole has been excellent, I just had a hard time processing things as quickly as required and was not feeling my best either.
From the Hyland Vineyard, blocks planted in 1984-85. Aged in 5% new French oak. Light-medium ruby red color, elegant, fresh, lightweight texture, striking red cherry and strawberry fruit, spice and a hint of licorice. I loved the light texture yet dense flavors. Beautiful!
