dark ruby colour and medium body. a bit of funk gives way to a complex nose of sour cherry, blackberries and plum with notes of sage, almond and mushroom. bright acidity and firm structure provide the space for the fruit to unfold with clarity and purity. accents of pepper, liquorice and nuttiness add depth and inform a very, very long finish.
a very satisfying and distinctive Mencía that should make a great food wine (after a good hour decant). small production (~2,000 bottles) worth seeking out.
12.5% AbV; from the very steep and small Penapedre vineyard in Ribera Sacra, it is a field blend made up of 64% Mencía, 21% Garnacha Tintorera (Alicante Bouschet) and other reds, and 14% Jaen Blanco (Palomino Fino); as result of the latter, it does not carry the DO; twelve to eighteen months ageing in neutral french oak vessels.

I've really enjoyed my limited experience with mencia, but this has been my favorite to date. (It's a blend but, I think, mostly mencia.) A little sulfurous reduction that took an hour to blow off eventually revealing a supple, red-fruited gem of a wine with real mineral character. If you like mencia or enjoy pinot noir, gamay or nebbiolo, this would probably be worth trying.
