  This wine was, quite simply, superb. After a little research we decided to drink it with partridge casseroled with white wine, celery & shallots and eaten with roasted root vegetables. The first thing I noticed about the wine - which had been decanted about two hours - was its unusual bouquet. I had been anticipating berry fruits but instead I thought of damp leather and aromatic wood. Then the colour struck me: a deep, dense ruby. With the meal the bouquet tended towards caramel & sweet spices and every sip released complex notes that I find difficult to name. The strong tannins we had worried about (given the delicate flavour of partridge) were simply not there and in my opinion it would be hard to find a smoother, richer wine. It was delicious from start to finish, perfectly complementing the birds, and my only regret is that we don't have another bottle! I am awarding a very high mark because I doubt there is any Rioja finer than this.
