Great QPR. Bought on release and cellared. It has grown into a delicate, spice driven wine that was a pleasure to drink. Decanted for a couple hours at cellar temperature and then consumed over a few hours. Lighter blue fruit. Pepper spice, earth tones, moderate acidity and finish. Fine, well resolved tannins. I looked back at my 2017 note and called the tannins "chunky". Not so any more. It can go a few more years probably, but not likely to get better. Drink in the next 18 months?

One of the advantages of drinking wine so long after I bought it, is that I cannot really remember why I bought it. Probably some over expressive prose or a high point rating. Normally, because it seemed decent "value" for the "quality".
Not sure exactly what I paid for this, but the quality seemed to be in line with the price, if the price was the $30 suggested by CT.
Lighter, more Grenache styled CndP (way lighter than a 2011 Crozes Hermitage the other night). Nose is raspberry and red cherry, some herbs. Palate is juicy and vibrant with red cherry and currant acidity, tannins are medium and the fruit persists pretty well on the palate.
Drinking younger than expected, this was one of my older CndP's and was worried after some of the 2007's that this might be getting on in age - not so. This drinks really well and is still not mature.

Opened to enjoy on the porch while grilling as I recall this being somewhat of a tough bruiser with lots of alcohol. I was right, but the remains a day later were really lovely in a classically Chateauneuf way - so much raw rubbed sage/rosemary/yerba santa, sweetly fruited but not liqueur-like, actually fresh. If I had another I'd give it plenty of air if it seemed dense and clunky because it needn't be that way.

I liked this much better this time around. Lots of garrigue, mineral, and lavender with a solid backbone of tannins behind it. It did not come across as particularly sweet or fruit driven, which increased the interest in it.

(DURIEU CdP Lucile Avril) Chateauneuf Dear Friends, This is one of the price/value stars of the season so take note. If you are looking for wine to cellar and drink (not sell), this wine is of superlative quality and it's $20-30/bottle less than its 2007 sibling. I'm not sure the 2007 is any better? After tasting a round of the best 2006 CdPs, this wine has presented itself as one of the top entrants of the vintage. 2006 will always live in the overpowering shadow of 2007 and 2005 but so has 1988 in Bordeaux and Piedmont (next to 1989 and 1990). 1988 is a vintage with a host of classically framed and elegant wines that have stood the test of time and 2006 in Chëteauneuf du Pape has a chance to be a similar vintage - at bargain prices versus 2007. The 2006 Lucile Avril has the traditional old-vine essence so many of you look for but lament the $50-60+ price tags that have become commonplace in the Rhone. Framed by 2005-like tannins and a wealth of rich extractives, this wine drinks more like a 1998 in youth than a 2006. It shows you how important the finest terroir can be - in this case, the wine made itself with little or no intervention from the Durieu family. They consider the 2006 to be as good as any vintage of the last decade and (after tasting the wine in its current state) I cannot be the only one that agrees with them. An outright bargain for this level: HIGHLY RECOMMENDED as a deep-toned, traditional example with extended ageing ability (priced like the old days). ONE SHIPMENT ONLY - they are now sold out of the 2006. This parcel has perfect provenance directly from the winery cellar: 2006 Domaine Durieu Chateauneuf-du-Pape "Lucille Avril" (750ml) Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA Rhone4830

Dark red. Pepper and blueberry nose. Some sweet smoke and red fruit. Simple. Moderate finish. Chunky tannins. Good QPR.
