60/40 Syrah/Merlot IGT (Super Tuscan). Upon opening, I initially got a musty smell…then barnyard; both of which blew off quickly. Now, the dusty aromas, so typical of Italian Merlot dominate. (Side note: if you’ve not experienced Italian Merlot but have had Washington Merlot, they’re hauntingly similar). And now, <30mins in, the Syrah comes through, with dark blue fruits intermixed with minerals and stone - Granite! The mouthfeel was initially very smooth, with chalky tannins that matched the dusty aromas but now the acidity’s emerged and the tannins have turned more angular - a good thing, for its aging-potential. I was somewhat certain that I’d have buyer’s remorse, since this was tasted just a couple hours after landing in Tuscany and so, fully romanticized by our surroundings, but we’re definitely not disappointed. This is good stuff! Last glass, 1+hours in and it’s back to the rich, smooth, dusty, well-integrated wine. It’s gonna’ require a marked level of restraint, to hold off on drinking these up.
