Wonderful, heady aromatics - violet, lavender, spice, bing cherry - and a parallel kaleidoscope of taste sensations, including forest floor, a bit of tar, but predominately big dark fruit. The acidity is waning, and some thought the wine burnt (though not of the exposed to heat type, more the product of age and winemaking and terroir). Best saved at cellar temperature, as it warmed, the alcohol level seemed to rise, and the phenolics began to overtake the beauty of the fruit aromas. Also, best with a hearty meat accompaniment, in our case, roast pork.
Rated +1 on a scale of -1 to +3.

Blind Syrahs at Chevalier (Chicago, IL): Served blind. Lots of red cherry, some funk and some VA on the nose. Palate is moderately concentrated with mature tiring fruit. Not a lot going on here.

Very pretty strawberry/black tea with perfect clarity. On the nose is subtle currant jam with white tea. I think the dominating fruit is cherry followed closely by red currant with a supporting cast of spices. It’s very easy to drink quickly due to the short finish and perplexing and intriguing flavor package. Something like petit sirah is holding the structure together with a nice snap of minerality and ginger.

Another Saturday at Chevalier...Mostly Blind (Chicago, IL): Double blind. Bottled approx 2008. Rich and slightly spicy, while also oddly in a lighter style. Not a particular personal favorite.
