Rockss and Fruit

(Pierre Moncuit Blanc de Blancs) This is just another data point that '96 is the most thrilling vintage in Champagne in who knows how long. This is a small grower based in the Grand Cru village of Mesnil and this cuvee is made entirely from Chardonnay. Beautiful crisp aromas of yeast, lemon curd, bread, minerals, kosher salt and tart berry fruit. Amazing entry with beautiful well-integrated acids and an intriguing salinity. Much less sharp and austere than it was last year with beautiful elegance and harmony. Poor man's Krug.

(Pierre Moncuit Brut) Sourced entirely from the Le Mesnil vineyard. 100% Blanc de Blancs. 1996 is proving to be one of my favorite vintages. Tight but incredibly promising. Nose of yeast. nuts, dough. Thick and concentrated with nice notes of spicy green apple and brisk acids. Very deep. Long finish and a lingering impression of acid suggest this will age for a while. While not unpleasant now this needs to be forgotten about for ten years.
