I have consumed close to 20 bottles since September 2012 and unfortunately have found more and more bottle variation. Some bottles have fruit that is too faded, and the acid is too prominent; however, these do go well with dinner. Others are still quite nice, but no bottle as of late has rated higher than an 89, hence my 88 average score. Drink up.

Opened on 9-30-12, popped and poured as the Benziger Sonoma Coast PN is clearly at its peak. The wine shows slight earth, cherry scents and flavors, with a faint floral note on the nose. Brick red in color, with slight browning at the edge. No discernable tannin evident, but it has enough acid to give the wine balance. There has been some bottle variation as the multiple cases of this that I bought in 2011 were stored in different locations by the wholesaler, but even the most mature of all the bottles is quite good. I hate using numbers to describe wines, especially wines of finesse such as pinots, but of the 25+ bottles of this that I have drunk over the past 10 months I would range the scores between a 87 and 91 with a 90 as the median score. I have had the 2007 Sonoma Coast pinot from Benziger, and the 2006 is clearly superior. The 2005 is past its prime on a clear decline, but the "every day" 2006 will be drinking very well through the next 18 months and possibly more. (Currently stored in a temperate controlled walk in wine cellar) I will post notes on the evolution of this wine occasionally.

The perfect pinot from Benziger! Every time I smell this wine I can imagine being on the biodynamic property, checking out all the natural elements of nature, taking a ride around the estate and of course tasting all the wonderful vino produced from Benzinger. I just added a half case to my cellar. That should hold me till my next visit to Cali. This vintage is still a little early to drink now (2008) but the tannins are not too harsh. I drank a bottle from the 2005 vintage shortly after I drank the 2006 and I can say the 2006 is a lot better. Of course drink what you like and I like the 2006 pinot noir Sonoma coast wine. Cheers!!!
