Reductive on opening but it blew off after half an hour or so. The color is amazingly dark and deep for a 16 year old wine. Lively. Aging gracefully. It's not going to get better and probably should have been drunk ten years ago, but still good and interesting.

Decanted for two hours, reticent nose, light to mid-weight, glass staining dark fruit accompanied by significant minerality and acidity. Tannins were not prominent enough to balance. Somewhat disappointed.

Poured out 1 hour before drinking, consumed over ~2 hours. Our experience with this was very much like thomaskeil's 3/29/2013 note - a gamey dark cherry nose with a palate driven by dark berries & slightly bitter coffee, along with somewhat gritty tannins and subtle but balancing acid. Good length on the finish, even if it shows the darker, rougher aspects of the wine more than anything else. Went well with pan-seared steaks. Drink now or over the next few years. 90-91.

PnP. Reddish violet. Nose has dark berries, smoke, a slight green olive streak and some gamey spice. Palate features dark fruits and a slightly lean texture that seems driven by edgy tannins and a good dose of mineral acidity. Like the 2007 it has undertones of coffee/olive/mineral. Great with food. Better (softer) on the second night. Really like this style of Cali syrah. Would recommend decanting and will continue to hold remaining bottles a few years.

Decanted for 1 hour, consumed with brisket and mashed root vegetables, great pairing! We were surprised to find this still a bit tannic and, although delicious tonight, in need of another year or two of bottle age. Nice balance, aromatic black fruits and cedar, and a touch of chocolate that I haven't seen in Wells' other bottlings. Nicely done, as usual!
