NOSE: very spicy bouquet -- reminds me of a smoky wet jerk seasoning; hoisin; lush loganberry fruit lurks in the background; hints of toffee, leather, and butternut squash emerged as the wine opened in the glass. Slight bit of alcohol on the nose.

BODY: garnet color of medium-deep depth; superfine particulate matter is suspended in the wine; medium-full bodied.

TASTE: cedar, oak, and cherry-blackberry fruits fully envelop the palate; there's a touch of mid-palate orange creaminess ... kind of like an Orange Julius, if you've ever had one of those ... anyways, I liked it; some earthiness, but overall this tastes more sweet than earthy, and there is a bit of raspberry that appears on the med.- long finish (40-50 sec); finish is a bit hot, but the flavor out-runs the alcohol -- in fact, this wine hides its alcohol very well (16.5%) ... I would have guessed this to be in the low to mid 15's; immediately, this wine struck me as being very well-balanced, but lacking in structural depth -- it's not an ager, for sure, and probably has two years of life left in it ... I wish it were a bit less oaky, but the oak isn't too much here. A very atypical Barbera -- the only one I've seen in Paso. Well done.

  • Like the Glenrose Syrah, this bottle was opened the previous day. I thought this was a very impressive Barbera; it showed much greater depth and complexity than most, if not all, Barbera’s I’ve had previously. I think I need to stop drinking cheap Barbera! The nose was a bit tight, but the cool cherry aromas were enticing. This ruby-colored wine has a lot of spice and juicy strawberries on the palate. Very well-balanced, this is an enjoyable wine. Didn’t score this one out, but I’d say about "90" or "91." In serious contention with the 2005 Syrah as my favorite wine of the tasting ... I think the Syrah is a better wine, but this Barbera was awfully captivating.
