Garnet-ruby color. Nose of dusty and leathery cherry with cranberry. Actually quite plush in the mouth, with similar flavors to the nose. Juicy and persistent on the finish. Better than expected.

Although the "Red Dog" is a reference to a pet and has nothing to do with the soil, it is fair to say that this is California's Les Rugiens. Scott Rich, one of my favorite winemakers, has made a brilliant, but largely unknown wine here. The 2005 Red Dog exults the Burgundy Clones from which it is made, managing to capture a lot of the bright acidity of a Cote de Beaune Pinot, and giving it a traditional rusticity, authentic of that region. However, as a true California wine, there is none of the anemia that sometimes plagues these grapes in their home soil; this wine has a raw power to it, leaving no dissapointment in the mouthfeel, and an aging potential that far exceeds a run-of-the-mill Cote de Beaune pinot. Characteristics include dark red color, more opaque than transparent, long legs, and a gripping nose that combines the typical pinot melange, with a touch of baking spice, and some other surprises. It is grippy, long-finishing, and as full-bodied as Pinot ought to be - no more so. It also has a split personality of both fruit and earthy characteristics that harmonize nicely. One of my favorite domestic pinots.

Out of split. A little old jammy funk on the nose but this belies the ongoing survival of the fruit on taste.

Drinking beautifully. Only have one left:(. One dining companion said 'goes down like silk'. Great nose, deep color, rounded fruit. Complex
