  • Recreating the McRib with Syrah Pairings; 10/9/2011-10/10/2011 (South Haven, Michigan): Anwar brought this bottle. Probably my favorite of the 4 Syrahs we tried. Slight rubber tire aroma but it did not detract from the wine. Meaty with notes of herbs and red fruit. Round texture with some nice secondary flavors that made it stand out for me. This was the 5th different Copain Syrah I've had and it tied for the best with the 2001 Eaglepoint Ranch. 93 points.

  • Color is deep garnet; some spice and pepper on the nose that I interpret as whole cluster aromas, but they are well resolved and integrated into the wine. Plenty of deep red fruit flavors, almost a candied cherry quality, though not to the point of being syrupy, other notes of dark raspberry and strawberry. Good balance of acidity and some tannic structure. This is showing as an earlier Copain style, not over the top, but definitely more sweet and lush than wines Wells is making today. Holding up well, but I don't see it developing in some way that would justify holding for much longer.

  • Initially very savory with dominant characteristics of game and dried herbs along with iron shavings and a floral edge. Over the course of dinner the blackberry fruit moved to the forefront along with camphor and black olive. Richly textured with a superb balance of density, structure and energy. An amazing value. Excellent, but just lacking a little of the depth found in the higher-end Copain Syrahs. At peak now and should be good for the next 3-5 years.

  • Exuberant aromas of apricot, wild flowers, blackberry, bacon fat and a dark woodsiness. Medium bodied and a little more civilized in the mouth than the nose predicts, with raspberry, peach schnaps and salty olives. Bright, zesty finish of graphite, crushed stone and precise red fruits. Seems to have the acid structure to carry it at least another 5 years. A characterful wine and an excellent value.
