  • Opened an hour before serving. Initially showed a combination of red and black cherry with clear ripeness and concentration. Still a bit tannic and backward, but that's the 2005 vintage, but also still showing a bit of pronounced new oak. Second half of the bottle was set aside for several hours, at which point it hadn't opened up much, in fact possibly seemed more closed and stern, while also still powerful. Lots here, like many good 2005s, but just not of pleasure yet, again like many 2005s.

  • From magnum, decanted for an hour, then back into the bottle for another couple of hours. Great floral nose with lots of great red fruit and wonderful spice. Flavors showed more black fruit and less spice than I expected based on the aromatics. Some people thought the wine was still a bit oaky, but I think the wine still needs a few more years to fully harmonize. This was certainly a nice wine but I don't think it will ever show classic Volnay style. Still one of the better Hospices wines I've ever had.

  • Fairly recent auction purchase. This was a bit of a rollercoaster. There's some weird oakiness (HdB new oak?) that would occasionally obscure the fruit completely- some toastiness on the nose and a blockiness on the palate. At other times, a beautiful volnay shined through- minerals, velvet, pomegranates and cherries. Pretty clear to me that the fruit will outlast the oak and that this will be fantastic with some time.
