  • Da Knurd's 43rd BDay Celebration (Knurd's House Wake Forest NC): Almost 20 years later this wine was still going strong with plenty of yellow and green apples, honey, and some toffee, apple core, and waxy hints. Faintest traces of nutty oxidation on the finish but the apples are still pretty fresh. Surprisingly acidic considering the age, which keeps the structure vibrant.

I met the winemaker, Jerome Chabolet, at Wine Authorities in Durham back on 11/06/2008 and he told me this wine could age up to 25 years in the bottle- I am definitely a believer!

Bumping my eval to an A+ (97) based on its ageability and value- $20 for this is a retrocative steal. I have also tried a few bottles the 2002 but they have not come close to approaching the magic that was the 1999 bottling.

  • Popped another bottle for 1st wedding anniversary. Subtle yet mouth-filling flavors. Perfect balance of acidity and weight. Improves with air, took about 10 minutes to really open up.

I paired it with a fresh ricotta gnocchi and my wife with a savory tart. Fantastic on both accounts. Super wine from the Loire and really enjoyable. My opinion, the best Muscadet you will ever have.

Style & Quality: A (see 11/08 entry for tasting notes)

Value: A- (around $20/bottle, expensive for Muscadet but worth every penny)

    Overall: A

  • Drank at my wedding luncheon. Drink at room temperature or only slightly chilled. Too cold and the nice subtleties of the wine disappear.

  • Tasted with the winemaker. Nose of honey, almonds, and hints of apricot and other stone fruits. Smooth as silk on the palate, with honey, apple core, and a nice slightly almond bitter finish. Unbelievable transition across the palate. Winemaker Jermome Choblet says this wine can age for another 10-15 years. Will try and put that to the test! (CMS A-)
