This was slow to strut it's stuff. But really balanced with some great acidity and integrated tanins. Still rustic but smooth. Definitely better than the bottle of the 96 I had that had a lot of VA.

From the moment I put my nose to the glass, I knew that I was in for a treat. The '99 Isole e Olena Cabernet opened with a gorgeous, perfectly mature bouquet, mixing ripe black cherry and plum with earthy soil tones, a hint of animal musk, and then lifting dark florals, adding sweet mint, and licorice to an already alluring experience. On the palate, textures of pure silk swept across the senses, carrying citrus-kissed, tart black and red fruits over a core of vibrant acids, as tertiary notes of earth, salty minerals and undergrowth developed, hovering over a coating of resolved tannin. The finish was long, with just a hint of residual structure, as notes of blackberry, licorice, smoky minerals and savory exotic spices slowly faded.

Consumed next to the 1998, not even close in taste or longevity. The 1998 is far better (note provided).
Upon uncorking this wine has a completely terrible smell. I asked my friend of this was corked, it was that bad. After about 45 mins it soften, but never went away completely...
Fading fruit, decent finish, unremarkable except for the smell upon uncorking.

PNP into Zalto Burgundy glass (“Fruit” day): Medium ruby to the eyes.
Very distinctive cherry and plummy fruits, dried mandarin peels.
Really highly finessed on palate. Very consistent notes on palate.
Great interpretation of this variety in my view. 93-94 points.

Riper than the san leonardo, with lots of fruit and then cedar. Good acidity to balance the ripeness. Less elegant.
