  • When opened, this had an attractive nose with sweet cherries, cocoa powder, and rich earth. The palate was a little closed, with acidity and tannins present but the fruit not fleshed out yet. 90 minutes later, both the nose and palate saw some VA show up, and it really distracted from the expression. The fruit did ultimately round out a bit, but it was hard to get past the VA. Bummer.

  • This was quite closed upon first being opened, with little in the way of aromatics or fruit on the palate. But with some air and some time to warm up from cellar temperature--maybe 3-4 hours--it started to show much better. There was some characteristic sweet red fruit and earthiness to the aromas, but they were more general burgundy characteristics than anything site-specific. The palate finally showed some of the crunchy fruit that '02 often has, with the acidity providing lift on the mid-palate. But there is a surprising amount of somewhat drying tannins on the side and back palate. Maybe these will integrate over time, but maybe not. On the whole, this lacks the elegance one might hope for at 16 years old and may be affected by the extractive techniques that were in vogue among some producers at the time and by the higher than typical new oak percentage characteristic of NBI cuvee unique bottlings.

  • The acidity here was quite shrill when first opened, but ~6 hours later the fruit had fleshed out to yield a nice balance. The nose was nice enough, with turned soil and sweet red fruit, but not particularly exciting. Great, fresh character on the palate though, with the acid providing a snappy core to the medium-weight, solid fruit impression. I did not pick up any residues of the sometimes heavy-handed oak regime that can affect the North Berkeley bottlings, and this was indeed the "cuvee unique". There's certainly still some tannin remaining, so I suspect this has positive evolution ahead of it yet. Nice burgundy.

  • Burgs 02, 03 and 05: Ruby color. The nose is earthy with cherries and iodine. Nice wine that has a good balance. This seemed the most ready to drink of all the wine on the table. Slightly minerally, nice cherry fruit. Good balance. I am sure this lasts for a while, but I doubt it gets much better. Still, nice to drink.

  • Maybe tight, but seems a bit angular and thin.
