  • Non blind:
Sweeter tomato paste on the nose compared to the 2012. The age is showing with garnet/copper edging. 7/10 tannins

  • A blend of Merlot (53%), Cabernet Sauvignon (23%) and Cabernet Franc (13%). Aged for 13 months in French 300-liter oak barrels. 13,5% alcohol, 2,4 g/l residual sugar, 5,6 g/l acidity, pH 3,7.

Moderately translucent, developed color with a mature hue of brick orange, turning almost tawny-yellow towards the rim. The nose is quite a beast; someone described it as jamming a soft-ripened cheese into an old wool sock and burying this cheese sock into ashes and tar obtained by burning wood and car tires. You really can't describe the first smell as particularly pleasant. However, with some air the stinky cheese aroma disappears, leaving behind notes of ripe blackcurrant, some smoky burned wood aromas, a little bit of old furniture and a hint of ripe plums. The wine is ripe, gentle and soft on the palate with rich flavors of plummy fruit, tar-flavored candies, some smoke, a little bit of sun-burned dark fruits, a hint of leather and a developed touch of wizened fruit. The wine is a bit lacking in structure with its medium acidity and round, mellow tannins - although there is a slight touch of robust bitterness, giving the wine some sense of structure. The finish is somewhat smoky and developed with flavors of wizened dark fruits, white cheese rind, some toasty wood spice, a little bit of bitterness and some alcohol warmth.

An interesting experience for sure. The nose is quite robust and off-putting at first and never becomes particularly enjoyable, but the wine is fortunately somewhat enjoyable on the palate. It's lacking a bit on the acid and tannin department, but other than that, it shows some interesting, mature new world characteristics you quite rarely get to taste. All in all, this wasn't my favorite wine in our tasting of 12 new world wines, but a pleasant and interesting experience nevertheless. I just wish it had shown more serious structure. Good value at 18€ - you really never get to taste new world wines this old at this price.
