  • I enjoyed this bottle last night with Jackie and Antonio and Brookie. Decanted for an hour or a little longer, served with slightly spicy cheese enchiladas, rice, guacamole, and chips. The wine is very dark and solid to the rim. I detected a bit of subtle plum, spice, licorice, and perhaps a couple of other things. Antonio mentioned smoked tobacco. Very balanced, not too astringent, well balanced, very age-worthy. I don't drink a lot of higher end malbec, but compared to bottles I have had, I think this is a very fine, traditional example of the varietal. These grapes come from a 100 year old vineyard and are picked separately, after the grapes for the entry level bottle. Far less residual sugar than other malbecs.

Looking back, I think I should have let this bottle decant longer, because I suspect there is more going on which would have revealed itself over time. Also, we were watching fights, so that may have caused me to not pay as much attention as I should have. I plan to try to find a couple more bottles of this vintage and re-visit this classy wine in a couple of years.

I don't know if I can predict the window for drinking, but I think that five years is a safe bet. Without more experience with older, higher end malbecs, I cannot say whether the tertiary notes have shown themselves fully, but if this wine gets any better, it's going to be a real beauty. Delicious, balanced, full-bodied, and inviting.

  • Decanted for 6 hours, rich and full-flavoured. Everything in a perfect balance. Great Malbec, the best i've tasted so long. Will hold for minimum 10-12 more years.
