  • Shy at first, it really opened up with surprisingly rich fruit for mencia. It's definitely still alive and quite elegant.

  • Last of the case purchased in 2009. These improved steadily. By 2014 this was remarkable. Very elegant and refined. Not what I expected based on tasting over the 5 years. Flavors were rich in forest floor and dark fruit. Interesting overtones of cedar and spice but in a balanced way.

  • Thank you, Eric Asimov! Love this wine everytime I drink it. Nose of mashed sour cherries and riich loam; long-lasting bouquet with eventual spicy notes expressing the alcohol. In the mouth, the wine sneaks up, starting softly, building to ripe fruit, climbing higher to an acid peak; finally sledding down a run of spice recalling the last notes of the bouquet. Would love to see this wine develop beyond its primary characteristics.

  • This was a great bottle that was absolutely singing (and an extraordinary bargain). A bit of patience here pays off. The aromas were an intense and complex perfume of black and dark red berries, stone, and spice (though this is unoaked). A true pleasure to breathe in and savor. While clearly a wine that speaks of its place in NW Spain, the wine's aromas (and the steep slopes on which it is farmed) somewhat recall a Northern Rhone. On the other hand, the palate was akin to a high-quality Loire red -- I'd love to put this in a line up with a Breton or Baudry.

  • round mixed red cherry and plum, must and horsehide notes; round mouthfeel and not quite enough acidity for me; however, distinctive and interesting;

    (D. Ventura Viña Caneiro Summum) From a slate, uncertified-organic vineyard in the Doade-Amandi region. 100% Mencía. Unoaked; 13.5% alcohol. A deep black-raspberry-cranberry color leads to a clean, complex Ribeira Sacra nose of red fruits and minerals. After a great burst of exceptionally complex, rich redcurrant, pie-cherry, and pomegranate fruit, there’s no oak to mar the haunting, mineral finish. This is one of the most delicious wines of the region and a real bargain for the quality. God and Men in Ribeira Sacra
