  • Winefool Going Away Party and Cellar Depletion (Jack's Bistro - Chicago IL): Tasted 2 days ago, note from memory. I do not exactly know what this wine might be, and didn't bother to find out. Too old and lacking interest.

  • I admire this producer and respect what he's trying to accomplish in the vineyard and the cellar. His white wines are remarkable, and I bought a couple of bottles of his red as a comparison. These too are highly individual wines, with vines planted to international varietals on the steep rocky mountains of northeast Italy near the border of the former Yugoslavia. But it shows less well, I think than the whites.

The wine is still very young, with a deep ruby-purple, and a nose and palate that are not what I would consider typical of either Cab or Merlot. Very smokey, dark fruits, spice and earth, with some Cab-Merlot notes: eucalytpus and cocao. The balance of fruit, acid, and tanin is good, but it is a bit thin, and there's an herbacous note that doesn't sit well. Hollow on the mid-palate. Perhaps some age would help, as it clearly shows very young, but I don't think more time will produce the roundness I'd hoped for.

  • Good friulian/slovenian winemaking from the stunning border town of Gorizia. Closed at first, but lush, herbal, slighlty herbaceous nose, some floweriness around the edges. Good structure. Medium lenght. Defnitiely evokes the rich lush terroir of this part of italy, moist, earthy quality. Very gfine winemaking.
