  • Initial nose much like one of my favorite wines, but palate not so much. ... Interesting blend of black cherries, citrus fruits, mushroom, basil. ... Palate on the smooth side with licorice notes, bubble gum, pepper. ... Subsequent glass produced rubbery nose. ...Obviously mature, rustic, mild tannins.

  • Decanted 1 hour. Nose of sultana raisin, white and black pepper, potting soil (one word: dirt), and sweet, creamy French oak. On the palate Galloni's note of "violets, mint, herbs and plums" is spot on. Also has some pomegranate and strawberry reduction and a steeped green tea tannic finish.

  • Quite different from the last bottle. Opened 30 minutes from first consumption, the cork was soaked halfway. Still full-bodied, but much more black fruits than the first bottle. Great legs in the glass, the tannins are still apparent. This was still improving after 90 minutes of air. One more bottle, which I will probably gift to my father who was so impressed with this bottle on this evening. Will look to more recent vintages.

  • A dark ruby in the glass, this Sicilian red initially featured a nose of dark red and black fruits, oak and leather. This was initially repeated on the palate, with strong, nicely integrated dusty tannins and a little cassis. However, as this was open 60-90 minutes it really blossomed, with strong and bright cherries and spice coming to the fore, the tannins becoming better integrated, and a pleasing texture (like raw silk) on the palate. This ended flat-out delicious, and I would recommend a 60-90 decant for this in the future.
