Very much alive for a 43 year old wine. Cork emerged fully intact. Initial taste was a bit astringent but the next day the wine has really blossomed. Lots of fruit, still some tannins and rather elegant

Second bottle and not corked this time. decanted just prior to dinner. This wine still has substantial structure and could be decanted a little earlier. This really is a characteristic of the 1978 wines. Beautiful, ripe Barolo character with great texture, concentration and a long finish. There's no hurry to drink this wine.

In the glass, it shows a carnelian color with a brown rusted ring. On the nose, over ripe plum and thick fig. On the tongue, it is rich, hot, and woody, coating the front and mid palate with a very long finish.

Wow! This was a stunning surprise. After 42 years this was a beautiful wine. Strawberry/raspberry fruit combined with typical old world earthy notes still intact. Med to hi acid and fine grained silky tannin made this a great experience. Velvety on the pallet. Long aftertaste. Guess it is best to hold the old barolos for 40 years.

Not terribly, just enough to take away the wine...
