  • So two things I didn't notice until I was about to pop (Durand) the bottle. 1., Richard Arrowood was the wine maker - pretty awesome! 2. This 1978 cabernet is 15.9% abv.....maybe not so awesome, ha! That said, while this wine wasn't at all what I was expecting when I pulled it (was in the mood for a fully integrated cab that hopefully still had some nice fruit left), it's absolutely delicious! Dark purple in the glass with almost zero bricking and dark, ripe fruits on the nose. Is this really a 1978?!? In the mouth this is SUPER primary with blackberries, blueberries, and spice. Literally ZERO secondary characteristics. Blind, I'd say this is an 8 year old Zinfandel from a top producer. Now that I've shifted my mindset, I'm absolutley LOVING this wine....but it must have been truly a beast (i.e. undrinkable) when it was young. Setting aside varietal typicity....I'm a happy camper! Cheers to surprises and being open minded :)
