  • Leaf Day - Decanted off a very small amount of sediment. Almost opaque garnet out to a ruby edge. Very youthful in appearance. Nose of damp loam, dried dark fruit, dark chocolate, dried tobacco, and black liquorice. There’s a touch of red fruit and some herbal elements as well. On the palate it’s medium bodied with medium tannins and acidity which balances the ripe dark fruit, leather, savoury herbs and dried dark fruit. The finish is medium plus in length but the fruit diminishes quite quickly leaving only the leather and some black liquorice flavours. 89 points at this stage.
One hour later - some sous bois and dried red florals are entering the nose now along with some port-like plum notes. Getting quite complex on the nose. The palate is still structured with ripe tannins but red fruit is showing now along with some sweet herbs.
2 hours later - nose of dark, rich stewed plums, red florals, sweet herbs, sweet tobacco. black liquorice, and the tiniest hint of rum barrel. It’s ripe, rich and round on the palate with deep fruit (both red and black) with sweet herbs and a smoky note. The finish is now long with the fruit continuing right to the end. Delicious (and excellent with duck confit). 92 points now so that’s my rating.

  • Root Day - Decanted off a small amount of sediment. Dark garnet core to a browning garnet edge. Nose of bottle stink at first (needed some swirling to get the oxygen in) but then dark chocolate, dark plum, loamy earth, black licorice, dried tobacco and dried herbs come to the fore. On the palate the dark fruit hits first with tobacco, herbs and dark (90%) chocolate following. Definitely some tannin left - relatively ripe and showing some sweetness but with a drying finish. Because the fruit is light, the tannins and acid stick out along. Definitely a food wine and one I’d drink over the next couple of years before the fruit has completely gone. And.... it’s slightly corked - just a bit, but enough to notice if paying attention.
So... it wasn’t corked at all! It took a day on the sideboard- just stuck the cork back in the 1/2 full bottle (decanted and then returned to clean bottle) and left it at room temperature- and this wine is delicious!! Today the nose is dark floral, dark plum, sweet dark licorice, and sweet herbs. On the palate it’s lush and soft with full bodied ripe dark fruit, spice, licorice and sweet cooking herbs. Wow - what a beauty! If rated today, it would be a 92.

  • Still garnet at core - youthful in expression. Nose of dark plums, herbs, violets? and a bit of alcohol (the label says 14%). On the medium bodied palate there's dark fruit and a touch of fruitcake but the negative is a bit of a watery hole in the middle and finish. Good but not terrific. Drink now
