| Community Tasting Notes (average 89 pts. and median of 89 pts. in 1 note) | | | Tasted by RPerro on 9/12/2009 & rated 89 points: Oregon Wine Country Tasting (Willamette Valley, OR): A tiny 4-barrel lot (70 cases) of Pinot noir sourced from Anna's Vineyard in the Chehalem Mountains AVA, comes this very dark, spicy wine. Very tasty, and maybe tied for my favorite Owen Roe Pinot at this tasting. Sweet cherry fruit, lots of spices and acidity. (137 views) |

With vineyards throughout the Pacific Northwest, Owen Roe, named after a 17th century Irish patriot who dedicated his life to political equality and freedom, is owned and run by Jerry Owen and David O'Reilly (winemaker). Their aim is to source only the very best fruit from top sites in Oregon and Washington, handle it gently in the winery, and produce wines of superior balance and quality.
From winery: This four barrel blend from tiny Anna's Vineyard on Schaad Road in Newberg exemplifies Pinot Noir from this new appellation. The basalt soils contribute to the dark fruits, spice and a rich textural palate weight. Three barrels are from the Pommard clone, and one barrel of the Dijon 115 clone. Together, they form a seamless wine that is lithe with plush tanins. This wine is the richest and deepest colored of our 2008 Pinot Noirs. 70 cases produced.
About red wine
Varietal character (Appellation America) | Varietal article (Wikipedia)
Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.
