  • Ken's First Father's Day (Home): Well, what to open on Father's Day but my father's wine? Only decanted for 3 hours, this needed WAY more time. Dad had shared a bottle w/ Seth Kunin when he was in town, and that bottle had been decanted 6+ hours and showed a bit better. Still, though, this was really, really powerful. My scribbled notes say, "Bacon dipped in black pepper with a side of dark fruits." That sums things up nicely, I think. The pepper was a hair overwhelming, but I was told that it recedes with more time in the decanter. In any event, this has great potential. Bravo.

    N.B. - This was the only vintage of Terre D'or -- it's now known as "Alder".

Rockss and Fruit

    (Terre d'Or "Alisos Vineyard" Syrah) Oak, oak and more oak in all of its glory on the nose. Focused vanilla, mocha, chocolate aromas. With coaxing you get a hint of berries. That is with major coaxing though. You almost need to create a whirlpool in the glass to get that faint hint of berries. No way I would have ever thought this was Syrah if this was served to me blind. Better palate with nice cocentrated fruit and jumpy acids. Actually, pretty expressive on the palate with great complexity in the mid palate and finish. Flavors of blueberry, raspberry and currant seep through on the heavily charred finish. The oak is on the palate and is heavy but not as invasive as the nose. This wine puzzled me. There is obviously good material here. Fruit, little bit of terroir (smokiness is starting develop, little gaminess). I am not a winemaker by any means but maybe all the time this spent in new American oak could have been spent in 1 year old French or gasp 2 or 3 year old French oak and more of the vineyard and fruit could have emerged with the oak being just an aging vessel. The name of the vineyard is on the bottle. Shouldn't that mean that this vineyard has special qualities that it imparts when Syrah is grown and bottled from there. Sorry for the rant but CA has so much potential and every time I taste a wine like this it gets me fired up.
