  The note preceding this one—by Acyso on 1/1/23—perfectly describes my experience with this bottle. There's a thrilling, dreamy object in there, encumbered only slightly by a shear layer of fruit leather. Mulled red apples. Antique, subterranean timbers. Acidity rouses as it drinks. Let's see how it wears.

  Lunch at Triple Crown (Chicago, IL): #07-02. Dee Vee Wines bottle. This felt a little advanced to me, especially in comparison to other 2001s I've had. I think it's generally true that Schaefer whiffed the vintage a bit, and while this is definitely a nice wine, it definitely doesn't live up to my hypothetical excitement of the confluence of Schaefer, 2001, and auction. Slightly browning with a creamy peach note; this doesn't have quite the acid-driven freshness that I would have expected. Somewhat sedate and rounded.

  Honey-coated red delicious apples, ripe yellow peach, cinnamon-spiced pear, jasmine, and tea leaves. Intense and concentrated, yet elegant as it rolls across the palate. The finish is everlasting, with slate mineral tones intermingling with yellow peach and orange citrus notes. What a wine!

  Yup. 2001. Schaefer. Domprobst. Spatlese. Auction. I've got a bunch of this in the cellar, so I was excited when Josh said he was bringing it. From the first whiff we knew this was the real deal. Deep, spicy. ripe red apple, peach, pear. Pretty ripe and wide with a bit of petrol emerging, dusty minerals. Nearly perfect on the palate: apple, peach. The age has brought that older-Schaefer creaminess that is awe-inspiring and difficult to grok. Spicy. Not huge but the structure is there, simmering. This is just coming out of its shell. Perfect balance. Stunning. Thanks Josh! Nose - 5/6, Palate - 6/6, Finish - 5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 2/2 = 18/20.

  Blocky and boring on opening, but after a double decant and a couple of hours this was singing, a glorious bottle. I think Jean and David basically nailed it, though I got quite a lot of enjoyment from it after it opened up. Still, no doubt its best days are ahead.
