  • This is a blockbuster Cab with loads of oak on the nose, perhaps unapolagetically so. Mostly smells like vanilla cream, white chocolate, wild cherries and kirsch with the faintest whiff of blueberry compote. This wine is actually surprisingly refined on the palate, bringing in lots of resolved and finely hewn tannins and a subtle, yet acceptable level of acidity. Round and fruit forward in the mouth, it finishes creamy and perhaps a little flabby with more than a dolop of sweetish, oak influenced spice notes. The wine is a little hot, reminds me of a certain style championed by certain wines like The Prisoner. Overall a solid wine with lots to love, but also which lacks complexity and just hits you over the head with oaky "make-up".

  • With due diligence, this declassified wine probably comes from William Hill's Coombsville vineyard which makes wine under the Bighorn Cellars label. Black, black color. One of the darkest cabs I've seen in a while. Cool climate dominates the nose with primal notes of fertile soil, damp cave, and moss. Hints of spring flowers, vanilla ice cream, and ripe dark fruits are also prominent. On the palate this wine is very primal showing heavy tannin, dark fruit, and oak. Exhibits nice attributes of fruit and earth flavors on the palate, yet is extremely young with potential to get smoother around the edges. This wine has all the components of a 90+ point wine and its just a matter of them coming together in the next decade. Definitely a cellar selection that will get better with time, yet fun to drink now.

FYI, you can probably find the 2005 Bighorn Cabernet for around $20, so $35 for the 2006 Tillman is a little steep assuming its made by the same producer. Still a fun wine either way!

  • Wine is still too young, needs to age.

  • The wine needs to be decantered and let breath for at least two hours. Its early to drink but the taste was very good.
