  • Welp, I finally drank that bottle I bought in 2011 and have been cellaring ever since. Turns out the wait was worth it!

Cork was in great (beautiful, actually) condition. Wine was bricking noticeably, but not overly so for 8.5 years of age on a pinot. Initially smelled of Old Wine (stewed fruits, old barrel spices that leaned toward mesquite), but after about 2 hours of sipping, the wine opened up into a well-maturing Burgundy. Mineral (gravel driveway) nose, with forest floor, herbal notes (eucalyptus and mint), potpourri (stems?), and crunchy red fruits (raspberries and strawberries). Palate is very well balanced, showing minerality, strawberries, raspberries, and some spiced strawberry jam on the finish. Caressing, silky tannins on the finish (reminiscent of mature grenache), with refreshing acidity.

All in all, I'm glad to have A) purchased this bottle for $30 in 2011, B) cellared it properly since then, and C) consumed it tonight over about 4 hours. If I had more, I'd enjoy them over the next 2 years or so, as I worry about the fruit holding up.
