  • New Year's Eve dinner.
Decanted a full twelve hours before drinking but in my experience will last weeks if necessary - which it will be!
The wine was bottled from cask in 1986 according to a back slip label. The colour in the glass is a translucent ruddy brown with clear edges, the legs clearly illustrating the viscosity as well as high alcohol level in this rare Madeira.
The nose is reminiscent of every spice one puts in your Christmas fruit cake, particularly cinnamon and clove, the fruit element of the aroma has a distinct citrus edge.
In the mouth the viscosity coats the tongue delivering a rich concoction of smokey desert fruit flavours, spice - as well as cooked apple. This would all be too much were it not for a dramatic backbone of almost kumquat-like citric acidity that forces the wine into balance in the medium sweet category - and sets the flavour on the taste buds for an eternity. This Madeira has length like no other wine I have tasted.
Rare, superb and unique style. For sipping in thimblefuls on its own.
If I had another bottle, would confidently hold for my 100th (2054).

PS Drank last glass from decanter tonight (10th Jan) - still outstanding!!
