  • After a 3 hour decant this was still a little closed and quite tannic. It did open up somewhat over the next couple of hours. Nice mushroom and earth on the nose. Relatively full bodied in the mouth with dark cherry fruit with notes of forest floor and a little smoke. Very smooth texture. Medium length finish with a little sour cherry and spice. This seems like it would benefit from a few more years in the cellar. Decent value at $35.

  • Decanted for aeration 3 hours, returned to bottle. This may have been WOTN for all; it certainly was for me. Given that I'd paid just $14 on closeout about six months ago, I really didn't know what to expect. This was a terrific expression of the region and the variety. Smoky, sexy, yet sleek layers of red fruit, a kiss of vanilla and structure to spare. Superb tannins and a lingering, layered finish. Superb effort for the region, in even the most celebrated vintages (which this was not, according to the pundits). 13,5% abv, highly recommended.
