  • Got this bottle from the winery's wine club for $31.50 and drank before dinner to go with seafood and veggie tempura (using Thomas Keller's batter recipe from The French Laundry cook book).
This is another (as usual) fantastic sparkler from Chandon. The nose is very yeasty; not much else comes through the bouquet other than scoops and scoops of yeast (which isn't necessarily a bad thing with bubbly).
This is one of the earthiest bubblies I've ever had; evidently the grapes in the Mt. Veeder area really carry their terrior with them all the way to the bottle! Once you maneuver your way through all that yeast and dirt, you'll discover a crisp, smooth, delicious Blanc de Blancs. Once the wine warmed-up, the Chardonnay traits really came through.
This bubbly is 100% Chardonnay; I (almost) always prefer Pinot-based bubblies since the Pinot Noir adds miles of depth and complexity that Chardonnay-based bubblies often cannot. But this is a wonderful 100% Chardonnay bubbly. The yeastiness and earthiness went wonderfully well with the tempura. As usual, great job Domaine Chandon on another fantastic California bubbly. Eat your heart out, Champagne!
