  • Lots of wine for just two people: Still fracked. Decanted it - and it had a good head retention, if I was judging beer. Still Badoit-like, then flat soapy water like. Horrid.

  • Random dinner notes (Columbus, OH): Decanted to get rid of a CO2 spritz ostensibly used to preserve freshness - frankly, the wine doesn't merit preserving.

A sweet edge to the nose with some odd fungal notes. Totally out of balance flavors come across as flabby without any acidic or mineral component. Rich but angular orange-oil type body. If any better than a bottle six months ago only because of the absence of CO2. Nasty.

  • Dinner @ Phil and Jen's: One fracked-up wine. Nice floral nose, muted. Like Badoit on the palate - effervescent on the tongue, though not visible to the eye. Bitter mineral elements as well and the same level of power and intensity - none. Never went anywhere after that.

The next evening, I opened the re-corked bottle. It popped like a champagne and there were wisps of curly smoke coming from the bottle and in the bottle. A small taste revealed pretty much the same elements, but a faint hint of Viognier aromatics and Condrieu herb floral on the finish.

No idea what to make of this. Very disappointing.

Update : According to the importer (Rare Wine Co), this vintage was bottled with an excess of CO2 to preserve the freshness. The wine should be drunk young and decanted to dissipate the CO2. Would have been nice to know this before ...

  • Dinner with Andrew and Elena (Columbus, OH): Characteristically bright, perfumed, and like crushed flowers on the nose; however, like mineral water on the palate - really spritzy and not at all enjoyable. Simply not good. Didn't blow off after several hours. If the "follow the nose" adage is to be believed this has potential, otherwise, really disappointing.
