  • This was a nicely balanced wine but not at its best. I noticed the next day that this bottle came from Premier Cru. One of a handful of bottles I extracted from them before things went completely under. In short, I feel that provenance was suspect on this bottle.

  • AP #13. Honey, white fruits, and plenty of acid make this a real treat of a wine. Delicate and complex. I've got another bottle but I don't think I'll hold it much longer, it is too delicious right now.

  • AP #13. Just a fantastic bottle of wine - piercingly bright orchard fruit, honey, light botrytis spice, and a strong slatey mineral character all come together seamlessly in a package that's intense yet very light on its feet with tons of acidity to balance the sweetness here. This is in such a great place right now.

  • NOTE- two major distractions to report; first this was served over Christmas dinner with family in small portions, and second my palate was pretty much shot (my sense of smell was completely gone) as I was starting to take ill, as so many of us are this year as the weather suddenly got very cold. The best tasting note I can manage (no aromatic evaluation and limited palate evaluation) is posted here as a reference point only because this is such a rare wine and I do not have enough bottles to justify opening one again in the near future.

Opened and decanted 4 hours prior to serving.

Bright medium lemon color, some effervescence even now after 15 years, on the palate appears to be entering its plateau, as is the 2002 Schaefer Graacher Domprobst Riesling Auslese Auction recently tasted, but this has a bit more weight and zest than the Schaefer while the Schaefer was more ethereal. The subtle building of the grapefruit-driven acid notes leading into a racy long finish was the high point for me. Very nice on the mid-palate, but ever so slightly heavy. Honeyed, and with rounded sweet fruit to offset the vibrant acidity.

Judgment reserved given my palate incapacities noted above on the date of tasting- but I would imagine this is a solid **** at the very least and ready to drink but with time in hand. While I will not open another right away, I certainly plan to do so within 2-3 years.
