Shocking! Dark garnet, but with a distinct bricky edge creeping in. Beautiful nose: mature Sangiovese, to put it simply. A tightly braided mixture of cherry, balsam, undergrowth, leather. On the palate, there's the shock: a belt of acidity. And it's wonderful - bracing! It's not rich, it's not full, and it's certainly not sweet. But it is a truly beautiful Rufina-style Chianti, and great with fatty foods. I've had old Selvapianas before, and loved them, but I had modest expectations of this junior member of the clan. I was wrong: it's shockingly good! (and could have gone on at least another five years, I'd say: the acidity again...) 14%, cork.

Dark purple, perhaps slightly murky. An assertive nose of charred oak, brambles and blackcurrants. On the palate, slightly indistinct Sangiovese flavours with notes of decay starting to show; a creamy texture with a tang of acidity on the finish. With food this comes alive; by itself it's a bit soupy and disjointed. A blend of Sangiovese, Cab Sauv and Merlot. 14%, cork.

Dense, deep purple. On the nose, slightly soupy Sangiovese: warm berries, a hint of charred oak, or burnt meat. On the palate, medium bodied with fine tannins and decent acidity. I have enjoyed this enormously in the past, but tonight it underwhelms me. With Tuscan sausage. 14%, cork.

Good stuff. And a nice middle-ground for me between old and new-school chianti. Good balance, middle-weight body, nice acids. Effortlessly achieves being drank up quickly.
