This is a rare varietal in Australia and my prior experience is only 2005 Smidge Zinfandel The Tardy. Made by a producer who specialize in Merlot, this is truly an interesting wine. Medium dark ruby with brick crimson hue showing sign of development. My first impression is... Wow! Huge nose of sweet ripe fruits, blackberry, blueberry jam and fruit cake. But after a while the nose has became more complex with dark cherry, raspberry, dried prune, chocolate, hints of tobacco and leather. The nose is nice but the sweet and jammy entry make me almost stop at first sip keep wondering how can a dry red wine be so sweet? But after few sips, some red cherry, fruit cake, sweet prune, vanilla oak and touch of spice showing up on the palate. Soft and smooth, just a touch of acidity which I will like to have more to balance the sweetness. Fine subtle tannins with a supple finish that linger. This is not a wine that I will love at first sight, but give it patience it will grow and surprise me.
