  • Slightly thin and somewhat acidic but otherwise decent. Not a whole lotta fruit. Medium finish.

  • Volatile acidity... friend or foe? Arguably an element of traditional Italian wine-making, which is to say not exactly a flaw. A bit can add a layer of complexity as well as energy on the palate, but when it juts out just enough to offend my palate I wonder... is it the wine or my own sensitivity on a given night? Do I have a fixed threshold of tolerance?

Last night's bottle was much like previous ones. Rustic. Warm. Exceptionally tarry and smoky, as though one were in the vicinity of a tire-fire. Olive tapenade, anchovy, and a touch of licorice on a somewhat focused core of dark sour cherry and blood orange fruit. And a whole lot of VA. Or maybe the same degree of volatility on a night when my sensitivity was more acute. Or perhaps it's the stars that were ill-aligned, as it was an especially poor date on the biodynamic calendar.

So I score it a notch lower, further undermining whatever shaky belief I may have in the efficacy of point scores even as I continue to experiment with them.

  • Translucent, deep cherry-red with some browning and a wide watery rim. Initially, a simple, rustic, decidedly hot climate wine with prune, black olive, licorice, and freshly laid asphalt predominant. But then rays of bright red fruit streak from a vibrant sour cherry core. Aging gracefully with no signs of fading. A ridiculously good value. (Lot B13210)

  • Color: A little thin, ruby red. Nose: black rubber, black plum, barnyard. Yum. Taste: Acidity like a good chianti, light, flavors of darker fruits, musty, cedar, decent finish. Very good QPR, and unusual chance to find such an inexpensive a wine showing age on the shelf and showing it well. Good with food, a fun wine.

  • This is a really nice wine. As others have said, it is very earthy and shows a little age. Good value.
