  • I bought this at auction and immediately regretted it. Even though I only paid about $10, a 16-year-old Chardonnay, under cork, didn't seem like a smart bet. The wine far exceeded my expectations. It had an advanced orange-gold colour (jonquil). The nose showed notes of brown apple, olive oil, and a hint of sardine. The palate was medium-bodied and oily, but with plenty of malic acid, finishing with a pleasant balance of oiliness and tartness. There were flavours of olive oil, coriander stems, tart green apple, and a touch of lemon juice. The palate shows little sign of oxidation, despite the advanced colour.

I found a listing for this wine on the Vintage Direct website (price: $25.99) calling it "well made, but rather predictable". I'd say my impression is consistent with that review: a well-made wine can develop interesting flavours as it ages, even if it seems dull and flavourless in its youth. For a Chardonnay to reach 16 years of age without developing any unpleasant flavours is quite a feat, and I enjoyed this a great deal.
