Introduction

The scoring during this night was done on the 20-point scale. I had to adjust the original scoring to the 100 scale.

Flight 1 - just to come into the stuff. (2 Notes)

Flight 2 (2 Notes)

Flight 3 - let the serious tasting begin! (2 Notes)

Flight 4 (2 Notes)

the 91 was pretased and at that occasion it was dreadful.. well.. see for yourself

Flight 5 - The Oldies.... (2 Notes)

These wines were not served blind. they deserve the proper attention from the beginning. It was clear that the biondi-santi was badly stored... :(

  • 1964 Tenuta Greppo (Biondi-Santi) Brunello di Montalcino 80 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Wine was not prperly stored. kork fell into the bottle with a little push. opened 8 hours prior to rasting ,decanted.
color: gold/brown like a tired vinsanto. not clear.
nose: oxidized, but still exciting in a way. nose inproved with time.
tasted not blind: well, for a not well stored 40 year old wine: not bad. you just need to taste it with expectations adjusted to it.
    sherry calvados tones. currants, nuts,
    diluted finish.
difficult to discribe, but it was axciting and certainly not undrinkable.

  • 1975 Fanetti Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Tenuta S Agnese Riserva 88 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montepulciano, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano

A big surprise.. who would have thought that a Nobile could last for 30 years?
Surely an old wine and surely it is past its peak but: this i a wine that has arrived into the next level.. a different kind of peak.
    curious, exciting stuff.
    but not in balance..
educational wine and even a pleasure.
    vegatal nose.. bit vinsanto nose.
acidity overrules the last bit of fruit. currants, vanilla, cacao, mocca even..

Flight 7 - Superflight (2 Notes)

Flight of the evening.

  • 1997 Tenuta Greppo (Biondi-Santi) Brunello di Montalcino 95 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

What a wine!! really a surprise, taking into account al the negative judgements on this wine. opened 12 hours prior to tasting
Shows it's class. has a lot of potential.
in the nose fine aroma's : stable, dark fruits, vailla and a little chocolate
superstructured wine. there are some tertiar flavours, but a lot of fruit, fresh acids and still a lot tannins, but the good ones.. enough too age for a long time.

    great wine!
very complex nose: lots to sniff here... dark fruits, stable, mocca, anice..
all this is confirmed in the mouth. little too much wood. great strucure.
    long warm finish

Flight 8 (2 Notes)

This is wh I love Brunello and why I should really store away some...

  • 1990 Altesino Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 95 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

ranked number two of the evening.

what a wine... at its peak now and probably will stay at this peak for 2 more years.
typical brunello nose... superstructure. tannins completely and beautifully integrated. everything on its place

finish a bit short for this wine.

stable, leather, tobacco in the nose.
fruit: cranberry, raspberry. tannins well integrated. nice acidity and a warm long finish.
    little tired.
