E&R Wine Shop, Portland OR
Tasted Saturday, November 17, 2012 - Sunday, November 18, 2012 by David Paris (dbp) with 876 views
E&R was pouring nearly 50 Beaujolais over the span of two days! An incredible opportunity to taste a great swath of the region, from all Crus, and many different producer styles. I found some absolute home runs here, some from producers that are brand new to me, and some from my old stand bys. An absolute blast of two days tasting, an extreme value in tasting experience, and a re-confirmation that this region is producing some of the top value driven age worthy wines on the planet. It remains my top area for that.

Nice and zesty aromas; crisp and clean. The palate is soft, but pretty straight forward sparkler. The finish has a metallic tone, which is really the lingering note that takes away from the wine.

Clean apple and minerals on the nose. The palate is very thin, showing clean flavors, but overall it's quite boring. Really thin and lean palate, offering a metallic bitter flavor that's off putting.

Very fruit forward on the nose. It really does smell like Welches grape juice coupled with an odd mineral tone. Wow, tons more grape juice flavors on the palate with a strong carbonic maceration component for sure. Tastes like the Grape Ape Voodoo Donut on the finish. Really light and not good, with an astringency that's hard to take. Had to dump my small pour.

Very light aromas, with slight mineral inflection. Soft palate with forward fruit flavors. Tart but pretty light and not much acid. Light grittiness on the finish, with mild fruits. Very light and not interesting, though nothing is particularly out of whack either. Just boring.

Green inflected fruit on the nose, which is tart and light. Lightly grippy palate, showing more green notes. Fairly light balance to this tart wine. Grippy and gritty finish. Very strong structure for the lightness, and strong structure in general for a Villages wine. It doesn't really have the fruit or other stuffing to hold up to that strong grittiness though.

Tart and light fruits on the nose. There's also something a little funky to it; perhaps a light whiff of brett. The palate has a larger presence to it, with none of that funk, just nice mild fruit flavors with some green briar and plenty of tartness. Grippy and lightly gritty finish, but this builds as it leaves the palate, leaving tartness.

Nice exuberance on the nose, with large fruit. It smells nearly creamy, like a marshmallow. The palate show nice texture, with creamy flavors but a grittiness that builds as its held on the tongue. Very nice larger fruit flavors. Similar on the finish, but not showing too much complexity or depth to go too crazy here.

Wow, this one's really funky... brett that I haven't noted in other vintages of this wine. There's light briar fruit as well but it's mostly covered. Nice and fairly large and heavy on the palate. Really fantastic richness and not as electric as other vintages have shown, but here there's still an amazing purity of fruit. The finish is also funky, with some tartness at the end with explosive structure, fruit, and acidic balance. Beautiful tannins here, with grand richness. Amazing how different this wine is than it has been in some of my favorite vintages, but it's still incredibly lovely and enjoyable.

Really nice fruit on the palate; exuberant strawberries dipped into bitter chocolate. Beautiful and delicious. Nice and large palate, showing decedent forward strawberry fruits. Creamy and luscious fruit.Really big fruit on the finish too, but with a wallop of acidity. Delicious, balanced stuff, tending towards the riper end of the spectrum.

Made from 80 year old vines. This offers lush aromas, but still pretty tight. The palate is nice and creamy, with the same oxymoronic lushness mixed with a leanness. Big tartness, yet creamy. Bitter and puckering on the finish, with a nice tannic balance and plenty of acid. One to watch. 89+

Good richness, and it feels a bit creamy and forward on the nose. The palate offers lush, electric fruit. Really pleasing and fairly light body. Light finish, with good balance but wide texture.

Very soft aromas, but this presents itself quite elegantly, with nice depth and complexity, if subtle. The palate is large, lush and expressive, with a creamy texture. There's a tartness to the fruit, but it is fairly large in size. Awesome eruption of acidity on the finish, which balances the huge fruit very well. Massive stuff, but still feels contained in its britches. I could likely go for a bit more acidity to balance that fruit, though.

Smells fantastic. Crazy richness here, with concentrated sweet aromas that feel creamy. Fantastically rich. The palate is really big and creamy, with voluptuous deep fruit, though it does feel a bit more mild than one would expect considering the size of the palate. The finish is soft and lush, with mild tartness. Again, a killer wine to consume on release, much like the '09.

Lush and exuberant aromas, with a thick wall of structure and even acidity noticed. Incredible intensity and balance on the luscious, rich, fruit stuffed palate with fantastic structural balance. Really, this is one of the most complete, balanced, deep yet lithe palates I've run across in any Beaujolais. Yup, there's big fruit, but its perfectly contained in its structure with absolutely nothing out of place and it still has a gracefulness to it. Finish is even slightly funky, but the perfect amount, and tart. Great intensity and balance, with strong fruit. This is a wine to sit back and contemplate how it pulls off the tricks it does so well. A beauty to be appreciated today and decades down the road.

Rich and intense aromas. Very nice briar flavors but this couples with great strawberry fruits. Really tight on palate entry, and remains tight through aeration in the mouth. Tart and gritty. Just feels young, with tannins building. The finish is also incredibly intense, but shows good balance to its elements. Feels closed down. I really do think this is going places, but it's way too tight for current consumption. Certainly better than the bottle I had 8 months ago.

Better than the sip I had a year ago, but this is still not my cup of tea. This is most definitely forward on the nose, showing some light brett, but there's also really heavy fruit. Big, rich and thick. Smells a bit new world, honestly. Thee palate is rich and huge. Yes again bordering on modern. Nice texture here, which is very smooth with a light grittiness to it, but really that thick fruit is a bit much. The finish shows a hint of that brett too, with nice tart acidity that builds at the end, but again begins building with piles of dark fruit. I'm conflicted on this one. It's certainly good, but the flavors are too dark and bordering on extractive. Not what I think of when I hear the word Beaujolais.

Rich and lush aromas; soft. Nearly creamy, and there's a graphite aromas underlying everything. The palate is large, but plenty of tartness to the fruit that shines through. Overall tart and tight. Similar finish, but there's some grape flavored pixi stick/fundip here too. Lots of acid as well. Gritty.

Tart and light aromas. Really soft texture, with nice fruit. Moderate intensity, but really no depth. Similar on the finish. It's pretty, but needs something distinguishing.

They poured this wine yesterday as well, but since it was the only Chiroubles it was poured again today. Fun to have this again from a different bottle to see how much BS I spew in my notes. This was light and lean on the nose, with mild tartness with a slightly green, herbaceous aroma. The palate offers fairly nice intensity, with green briar, but it's pretty tight and lean. Puckering acids and tartness on the grippy tight finish. Interesting blend of intensity and smoothness, and it feels very tightly wound. 89+

Lush aromas. Pretty big, but similar to their Julienas. Soft and mild palate entry. Really tart and creamy as it sits on the mouth, and tastes almost Pinot Noiresque. Nice fruit with good intensity. Really good acidity and intensity on the finish, with tart and creamy flavors. There's some slight brett here, but it fades quickly. Nice.

I noted a savory aroma on this bottle that I didn't on the one I consumed a week ago. Nice aromas with good size and weight to them, with pleasing bright fruits. Intense and interesting palate, with nice richness and great balance. One of the mightiest of the line up structurally, but very tightly wound. Really nice finish, with a slight metallic notion as well, but this is just very shut down right now. This was open for going on 4 hours by the time I got to it, which coincides with my experience of my previous bottle. That bottle I scored based on peak enjoyment. This one was likely there with 15 minutes in as well, but closed down. Goes to remind the reader how different a wine can show depending on when you sip it. 90+

Very rich and deep aromas; creamy. Delicious and decedent, like dessert. The palate is also creamy and lush, with nice exuberance to the bright fruit as well, with a strong grittiness. Crazy grippy and gritty on the finish. Really intense and lush, deep but great balance. Really the complete package of balance, with a nice future ahead of it. 90+

Some astringency on the nose, but there's also nice tart, funky puckering fruit. The palate is nice and rich, lean and tart, but lots of balanced intensity. Very tart and gritty texture on the finish. Nice balance, with another long future ahead of it. Certainly not up to the standard of the '09, but still a great age worthy specimen.

This smells exactly like the hard bubble gum inside the wrapper of TOPPS baseball cards! Awesome. I love that old smell. Fantastic stuff. The palate is lovely, with crazy intensity of rich fruit flavors and really creamy earthy strawberry fruits and a mild tartness. So luscious and forward, with incredible fruit and structure, with a slight earthiness underpinning the brightness. The finish is like thanksgiving day stuffing. Incredible lushness here as well, with great fruit and impeccable balance. Really tastes like turkey. Delicious, diverse flavors throughout this wine. I'm going to test that theory and pour this wine with Thanksgiving day dinner and see if others agree. 91+

Fresh and really nice, typically light Chardonnay aromas. The palate is nice, quite mild, and shows bitter tartness. It's light on its feet, but the tartness is nice. Lithe finish, with tart, puckering acidity. Pretty electric on the finish, with a stony minerality. Very nice.

Very quiet aromas; light. The palate and finish are incredibly bright and acidic, with nice bright, intense fruit, though fairly simple. This doesn't really have that typical carbonic maceration flavor at all... just feels like a light Gamay. Better than most Beaujolais Nouveau, that's for sure!

Really bright aromas, some minerality, and perhaps some sulfur? The palate is quite soft and light in flavor and feel; bright and tart, but pretty generic. Thin texture. The finish shows tart acids, bitterness, and green fruit. Soft and lean.

Very light aromas, with maybe some dusty mineral notes. Nice texture on the palate, with more forward red fruits. Quite exuberant with lots of smooth, tart strawberries and cranberries mixed with minerals. The finish is nice and tart with more of the bright, big red fruits. Really explosive acidity.

Bright aromas of large red fruits. Smells smooth. The palate is nice, with larger fruits and briar coupled with almost candied cherry flavors, but all with the typical bright acidity. Fairly tart and puckering on the finish, which is bright and drying. Nice stuff.

Very bright acids on the nose; a bit tart and funky. Wow, very bright on the palate, and this tastes cold. It's not physically colder than any other wine in the lineup, but it just tastes like there's icicles hanging off the bright red fruit. Really lean and bright acidity, too. And then what a wallop of acids on the bitter, puckering finish. Fruits as well, but the eruption of acidity is like a volcano spewing molten cranberry acidity straight down your throat. Yummy stuff!

More enormous, tart bright red fruit here, but this one's bigger than the La Voute St Vincent. Much larger on the palate too, which big bright red fruits and a much lusher and thicker body, but still showing the brightness, with a pleasing richness. Again, rich and largely fruited on the finish. Really nice stuff here, with good balance and depth, and an improving future ahead of it. 90+

Holy cow is this funky. Smells like quite the variety of bacteria. Stinky and dirty (but in a fairly good way). Wow, totally unexpected palate, which shows thick and rich earthiness coupled with bright red fruits with no funk what's so ever; just pleasing earth. Really rich and thick. Delicious stuff on the palate, and this carries into the finish but this time with even more acidity, though keeping the earth and adding intense strawberries. What a trip of a wine.

Smells a little lean and light with some slight medicinal note. Soft and creamy palate, with mild acidity and tart fruits. Soft, fairly light aromas. Really great balance on the palate though, with smooth fruit and tight acidity. Very compact right now. The finish is tart and lithe. Very lean, but this is balanced throughout; it's simply not showing much today, but the stuffing is all there.

This smells like cream cheese frosting on a cupcake, but it's a bit moldy. Really interesting combination of sweetness and funk. The palate is tart, lean, light, and not too much in the way of complexity. Fairly light and initially not too funky compared to the nose... but ohhh wow, all of a sudden funk rises on the finish, like a good funky cooked squash. Tart, lingering finish. Quite interesting.

Light aromas; like sea air. Fairly light on the palate with no real depth or complexity, just light general tartness. The finish is more interesting as it's incredibly puckering and bitter. Grippy and gritty, unexpectedly so. After the lightness on the palate and nose I wasn't expecting such a grippy finish. Kind of wild and interesting shift, but not really wholly enjoyable.

2010 Domaine Thillardon Chénas Réserve des Blémonts 92 Points
France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Chénas
(11/17/2012)
Interesting that this was in a Bordeaux bottle. Apparently he's going away from this in future vintages. The aromas here are very rich and thick. Wow... the palate entrance is pure elegance and class, with an immediate notation of its balance and intensity. Crazy integration with rich acids and fairly thick texture. Wild, with a pleasing balance of sweet, tart fruit and a slight underlying funk that's nearly undetectable. Yummy. Really rich on the finish. Quite different than any other wine in the lineup today, but in a wild and interesting way. There's some tartness, but it's also showing a wild, feral, funky streak just barely underlying everything. Really interesting. I took a bottle home with me and drank it that night. By itself it was way too tightly wound and became a big ball of monolithic structure when there was nothing to break it up. The following day I tried this directly next to the regular Chénas and while this is similar, this definitely shows so much more intensity and balance, though it is also tighter wound... That said, the tight wind will likely evolve to greater detail in the years to come. Look forward to watching this evolve for quite a few years.

France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Fleurie
(11/17/2012)
Spot on notes by my comrades below. This wine was wild and a total switch up from the tasting lineup. Glad they were at the end. This was incredibly bretty on the nose... I kept trying to find something else underlying it, but the brett is just too heavy. The palate however has lots of voluptuous fruit, and is quite big and lush, showing tartness and intensity. Rich and deep, with some of that funk from the nose. Really gritty and more funk on the finish. Rich and massive. Really nice stuff, with strong balance and strong acidity. Totally unlike other '07s I've had. I really look forward to exploring these wines in future vintages.

France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Moulin-à-Vent
(11/17/2012)
Wow, this one kills the Fleurie. Where the Fleurie was just all brett on the nose, this shows some of that but is coupled with strong strawberry underpinnings that make that brett just smell a bit earthy. The palate is amazingly soft and smooth, showing great harmony and balance. Soft earthy flavors coupled with strawberry fruit. This is elegant and pretty. The finish is soft and lighter, showing some mushrooms and a willow tree. Really great balance and richness, offering fantastic depth. The texture is quite lush and creamy, and certainly unexpected for Beaujolais, though it's welcome and doesn't sway from typicity. Again, I really look forward to exploring these wines in future vintages, but this one is definitely worth the price of admission.
