  • 1998 Penfolds Bin 389 91 Points

    Australia, South Australia

Served blind. Mint, menthol, cherry and raspberry with coconut oak. Palate has that mint spectrum element too, it is medium bodied with the tannins still forceful. Good wine but giving it more time to age is a wise idea.

  • 1998 Jacob's Creek Johann 90 Points

    Australia, South Australia

Served blind. The Coonawarra Cabernet element stands out here even though it is only 45%. Spice, cherry and light oak. Still primary on the palate and it doesn't seem to have mellowed out much yet at all. Has good structure and length and should age well over the next decade or so.

  • 1998 McWilliam's 1877 Cabernet Shiraz 84 Points

    Australia, South Eastern

Served blind. Porty nose with VA and vegemite. Palate is better with rich fruit but it still doesn't have much depth to it.

Blackberry, violets and raspberry. Excellent length and persistence with great pure fruit character. Has plenty of time left to develop.

  • 1999 Yalumba The Signature 88 Points

Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

Closed on the nose, there is some smoke and tobacco. Palate is heavily tannic, it needs time but it is struggling now. Would give it another 4-5 years before looking at it again.

  • 2002 Yalumba The Signature 90 Points

Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

Raisin, salami/meaty elements, earth and mint. Palate is black fruited, it is approachable and still primary but should soar with more time.

Shut down nose - there is some licorice and some stemmy notes. Medium bodied, there is good length but really not a lot of character right now. In transition.

Raspberry, spice and cherry aromas. Great structure on the palate with very good length. Has great potential for improvement.

  • 2002 Penfolds Bin 389

    Australia, South Australia

Alcohol heat and spice on the nose. Palate falls away and ends short. Not sure that this was a properly representative bottle.

  • 2004 Penfolds Bin 389 90 Points

    Australia, South Australia

Expressive nose - blueberry, floral and cinnamon notes. Palate is bright with the blueberry character balanced against the oak, there is good structure and length. Very youthful and will improve significantly given the chance.

Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

Mostly dark on the nose nose with graphite and blackcurrant with some raspberry and florals to give it lift. Bold and primary on the palate, there is structure behind it too. Balanced and very tasty but also youthful and with potential. Slightly ahead of the 2006 for my taste now.

  • 2006 Glaetzer Anaperenna 91 Points

Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

Toasty oak, blackcurrant, chocolate and some red cherry. Bold and vibrant on the palate with good balance. There is quite a bit of tannin right now but the vibrant fruit masks it well. Plenty of room to move upward.
