The four seasons hotel, the rocks, sydney
Tasted Tuesday, April 16, 2013 by chatters with 614 views
I was lucky enough to get an invitation to this rather splendid trade tasting. I cherry picked my way around and had a nice time.
It was nice to try the Voyager Estates again. The Alkoomis were disappointing for me, especially the blackbutt and the barolos and barbarescos were a pleasure.
2010 Alkoomi Chardonnay Black Label
Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Frankland River
Slight oak & butter, then stone fruit over citrus. In the mouth burnt butter, slight stone fruit. Okay.

2010 Alkoomi Cabernet Sauvignon Black Label
Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Frankland River
Jammy, anonymous black fruit, slight cream and butter notes. Still jammy in the mouth but a slight herbaceous/pyrazine note makes things a little more interesting. The tannins are slightly burnt and tend to drying out. Meh.

2007 Alkoomi Blackbutt
Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Frankland River
Cream, almost slightly sour milk on the nose that I just couldn't get past despite repeated aeration. In the mouth there is rich, slight burnt black fruit and lots of spice. There is also a touch of residual sugar. Not for me.

2009 Voyager Estate Chardonnay Project 95
Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River
Burnt butter and slight spice dominate on the fruit and slight citrus notes on the nose. In the mouth the wine is very fruit, textured and with spice and cedar notes. Very long, very juicy. Coming together, melding. Very nice.

2010 Voyager Estate Shiraz
Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River
black fruit underpinned by black pepper. Spice and more of the same on the palate. A little simple for what it is. The tannins are fine but intrusive on the finish. If anything I'd say it lacked soul…whatever that means.

2008 Voyager Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot
Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River
Bramble, herbaceous, cedar, clove, black currant. On the palate more of the same and medium plus body. The long finish carries the fruit and introduces slight mint and slight eucalypt notes. Medium plus tannin supports. Very good indeed.

golden, rich, oaked, worked, cream, spice, stone fruit, slight spritz and slight bitterness on finish, fruit but it's a little out of whack - the flavours are rather jarring and angular

2005 Luigi Pira Barolo Vigna Rionda
Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Caramel, vanilla, plum and prune, high tannin, spice, plum and almost blackcurrant, for me a more modern style. Hot spice but not alcohol warmth. Balanced. Big. Hmm

2007 Tabarrini Montefalco Sagrantino Colle Grimaldesco
Italy, Umbria, Montefalco, Montefalco Sagrantino
Burnt meat, black fruit, liquorice spice, more of the same I the mouth but the fruit is to the fore and the tannins are very drying. I have a soft spot for Sagrantino and this is no exception. It's not a 'great' wine but I like it.

2009 Bodegas Solar Viejo Rioja Orube
Spain, La Rioja, Rioja
French oak (I think), cedar, sweet spice over strawberry. In the mouth more spicy oak, strawberries and a massive, savoury, drying tannic grip. Interesting. Needs time. A lot of quality wine-making thrown at this tannic beast.

2009 Voyager Estate Chardonnay
Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River
Stone fruit, floral, slight oak and malo. In the mouth peach dominates, there is slight tongue grip and the acidity is sufficient to keep the wine fresh. Lovely.
